About Undergracephoto

Why We Build Kitchens Toward the Patio

Undergracephoto remodels kitchens in Carlsbad, and most of our work starts with the same observation. The weather here is good enough that a patio should be part of daily life, yet a lot of houses keep the kitchen closed off behind a single narrow slider, a pantry wall or a peninsula that faces the wrong way. People cook inside, carry plates around a corner, and use the outdoor table on holidays.

We try to fix that by treating the kitchen, the opening and the patio as one room. Sometimes that means a wide multi slide door where a wall used to be. Sometimes it only means turning the island so the person at the sink looks outside, and swapping a tired slider for a better door in the same opening. The right answer depends on the house.

What the Coast Teaches You

Carlsbad is not one climate. Homes in Olde Carlsbad and near the Village deal with salt air and a marine layer that can hang around until noon, so we pay close attention to door tracks, sill pans and the metal in hinges and pulls. Homes further inland in Calavera Hills, Rancho Carrillo and Robertson Ranch see more afternoon heat, which moves the conversation toward glass performance, shade and how a dark counter behaves in direct sun.

Housing stock matters as much as climate. A 1950s cottage near the coast has very different framing from a 1990s house in La Costa or a newer home in Bressi Ranch, and each needs its own approach to opening a wall.
